Most conversations about AI in admissions stay at the surface. They mention fairness, suggest caution, and quickly pivot to features or tools. But real trust isn’t built that way. It’s not a feature. It’s a standard. And that was the difference in this month’s discussion.


The December 9 video podcast didn’t treat ethics as a policy checklist or a technical issue. It focused on the actual question most teams are still figuring out: how do we help people trust the systems we’re asking them to use?


That’s not a theoretical problem. It’s an operational one.


What came through clearly was this: if your counselors can’t explain how a decision was made, it doesn’t matter how accurate the system is. If your team doesn’t understand how a score was generated, they will either ignore it or second-guess it. That’s not resistance to change. That’s a rational response to something they haven’t been asked to trust with reason.


The conversation made a clean distinction between fairness as a concept and trust as an experience. Fairness happens inside the model. Trust happens in the work. The only way to connect the two is to make the logic visible.


That doesn’t mean explaining every line of code. It means showing your staff why a student appears on a list. What behaviors pushed them forward. What signals shaped the timing. When that visibility is missing, the result is confusion, even when the math is solid.


One of the most useful takeaways was this: ethical AI isn’t about protecting against misuse. It’s about building systems that work the way people expect. Consistently. Clearly. And with enough structure that a counselor feels supported, not replaced.


That’s what enrollment teams should be thinking about as they prepare for next year’s planning. Not just what the system can do, but what it helps people do better. If your staff can explain it, they can use it. If they can use it with confidence, they can explain it to students. And that’s how trust spreads—not through announcements, but through daily action.
